- Aim for “simple pleasures” that are low-tech – walks, cooking, woodworking.
- Spend time in nature – jogging, gardening, hiking.
- Focus on the arts as your recreation – playing music, writing, drawing, painting, crafts, photography.
- Grow your own food! Keep a vegetable garden.
- Attend festivals related to other cultures and other times in history.
- Practice “do-it-yourself-ism”: make music; tell stories; grow food; bake bread; fix things; build things.
- Study in your spare time – there is no greater joy than learning.
- Take “sketching field trips.” Creating art is the antidote to consumerism, creates tangible memories, is more active and personalized than photography.
- Boredom is a positive thing. Read Jerry Mander quote from “Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television.” It’s really harmful to fill in your free time with worthless activities (TV, video games). Better to think, feel.
